At 23 weeks pregnant I couldn’t be more proud of how I handled myself over the last 2 days of park hopping. I’d like to share some tried and tested tips that have helped me survive the last two days at the Happiest Place on Earth!
Day 1-Animal Kingdom
Before I left home I researched on the Disney boards to see what rides I would be restricted from riding. The consensus seemed to agree AK park was the least pregnant friendly amongst the other WDW.
So I approached this day as an opportunity to really slow down and enjoy the natural surroundings of AK. I met with family around 9:30, a big group of about 15 people and as the day went on we branched out and discovered our own path to AK.
Here are my tips from this day-
Carefully select the rides you ride. Throughout all parks at Disney they give fair warning on what rides aren’t safe for pregnant women. Take those warnings seriously! No ride is worth risking the health & safety of your baby. At AK I didn’t ride anything.
Find alternatives to rides.
Disney has put in an insane amount of work in creating world-class, live shows and parades. My favorite at AK is the Festival of the Lion King!
Play carnival games & enjoy sweet treats. My husband and I had the opportunity to take my adorable niece around DinoLand while her mom (my sis) & dad enjoyed some big kid rides. We also fed her Mickey ice cream. She absolutely loved it! And we did too! We won her 4 new stuffed animals or “new friends” as she likes to call them!
Slow down, and enjoy your surroundings. At AK they offer many walking trails through animal exhibits. Take time to enjoy the beauty of nature displayed at this park.
Take mid-day breaks. I only sat during 2 shows and 2 meal breaks for a short time each. Being on your feet for almost 10 hours for anyone can be a challenge for any adult, but when you’re pregnant it can take a complete toll on your body. Take the time to return back to your hotel for a nap and to refresh yourself.
Elevate your feet to let your body fully relax: I elevated my legs on a stack of pillows and let my body relax after a nice cold shower.
Day 2: Magic Kingdom
After running on only 5-6 hours of sleep for the last three nights we decided to take the opportunity to sleep 8 hours last night. It felt amazing!
We arrived at the park at 9:30 am, and met up with family. We took off towards fantasy land and ran around non-stop until hunger struck. We stopped at the new Gaston’s tavern-a cute little quick service area. We enjoyed a pork shank that was to-die-for! Fall off the bone amazing! Then we were off again. Around 3, I needed a break.
Here are my tips-
Run on your own schedule: If you keep sacrificing sleep for park time you put you and your baby’s health and well being at risk. You’ll be too tired to truly enjoy the magic that is Disney. It’s ok to fall behind your group, you can catch up later.
Eat & drink: make sure you are eating enough food, we probably stopped and ate 6 times throughout the day. Stay hydrated, I brought a 100ml hydration pack by Dakine and make sure to finish it all by the end of the day. In the morning I fill it up at our hotel for free. It’ll save you at least $50 on water a day. Yes, at the parks they charge $3 or so for a bottle of water! Bring your own!
Take advantage to rest in the AC buildings. Listen to your body, if you need to stop, stop! Florida heat+tons of walking+being pregnant=a high possibility of overheating, dehydration, or much worse!
Rest frequently for long periods of time throughout the day. Don’t hesitate to just rest your feet on an empty bench for 30-40 minutes. I took a lot of moments to just sit.
Unlike day one, where I only sat during the shows and meals.
My favorite rest break was at a little garden area across the castle during the Celebrate a Dream parade with my mom & hubby! We were able to catch views of the parade while letting our feet breath!
Accept the fact that you can’t keep up with everyone else! This lesson was one I learned from my mom, and It took me a couple days to come to terms with this reality but I’m still learning to adjust to my pregnant body.
We stayed at the park till 7, and then went back to our hotel for the rest of the night. I still didn’t learn from my own tips from day 1 to take a mid day break. I promised myself and my husband last night that we would enact this as a rule. For the other two park days we will leave by 3:30 for a midday break! I’ll keep you all posted to see how it goes!
